(NewsNation) — While the Elite US Border Unit is recognized for its role in securing the nation’s borders, it also has an elite tactical unit that operates behind the scenes.

The Border Patrol Tactical Unit, commonly known as BORTAC, consists of exceptionally trained agents equipped for rapid response.

NewsNation gained exclusive access to BORTAC’s training facilities in El Paso, Texas, where these dedicated individuals continuously prepare to capture some of the most dangerous criminals, including cartel members, who illegally enter the United States.

“We conduct training 365 days a year,” stated Bryan Gru, special operations supervisor, during a mock hostage rescue. “All of these agents are deeply committed and meticulously chosen to be part of the national team.”

Agents participating in these drills aim for “zero fail” outcomes, as described by Chris Voss, the acting commander of the Border Patrol’s Special Operations Group (SOG). He emphasized the necessity for agents to adapt to evolving circumstances.

“Our team excels at this. It’s a serious endeavor for us, and we engage in continuous training,” Voss remarked.

The rigorous training and selection criteria for BORTAC agents are based on the protocols used for military special forces, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Applicants are required to master advanced weaponry techniques and demonstrate the ability to operate effectively as part of a team in high-pressure conditions with limited sleep.
