(NewsNation) — Donald Trump appoints Tom Homan. President-elect Donald Trump is set to appoint Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s initial term, as his “border czar.”
Trump Appoints Tom Homan
“I am excited to share that Former ICE Director and steadfast advocate for Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, overseeing our Nation’s Borders (referred to as “The Border Czar”), which encompasses not only the Southern Border but also the Northern Border, along with all Maritime and Aviation Security,” Trump announced on his Truth Social platform late Sunday.
“I’ve known Tom for many years, and there is no one better suited to manage and secure our Borders. Furthermore, Tom Homan will take charge of the Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I am confident he will excel in this long-awaited role,” Trump added.
Homan held the position of acting director of ICE from January 2017 until June 2018. He was responsible for the initial phases of the Trump administration’s contentious family separation policy, which involved criminally charging migrants who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border unlawfully.
Last year, Homan staunchly defended the debated policy of separating families of individuals who entered the U.S. illegally.
“I’m frustrated with the ongoing discussion about family separation,” Homan stated during the Conservative Political Action Conference last year. “I’m still facing lawsuits over that, so come at me. I truly don’t care. The fact is, we enforced the law.”
“When I was a police officer in New York and arrested a father for domestic violence or someone for [driving under the influence], I separated those families,” he continued. “When you violate the law with a child, separation is a necessary outcome.”
Homan conveyed a similarly assertive message at the Republican National Convention in July.
“I have a message for the millions of illegal aliens that Joe Biden has allowed into our country in disregard of federal law: You better start packing your bags now,” he declared.
Homan’s career commenced in West Carthage, New York, where he worked as a police officer. He later joined what was previously called the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
After serving as a border patrol agent, investigator, and supervisor, he was appointed by then-President Barack Obama to the role of Executive Associate Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2013.
Since stepping down as acting ICE director in 2018, Homan has been involved with the Heritage Foundation and contributed to its Project 2025, which outlines a strategy for Trump’s second term.
